kembar konvo seirasMONDAY, 24 NOVEMBER – A pair of identical twins who majored in the same field in Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering), Faculty of Engineering became the centre of attention at UMS 16th Convocation Ceremony recently.

Joanne Joseph Madis and Jolene Joseph Madis, 23, were dressed in the Kadazan costume at the ceremony which was held at Dewan Canselor (Chancellor Hall), UMS.

They were accompanied by their mother and siblings who expressed pride and gratitude to the university for all its services and knowledge given.

“We have a lot of invaluable experience during our studies here. What made it even more interesting was that we went through it all together,” said the twins.

Both aspired to become an engineer and expressed their sorrow of not having their father to share their success, as he died in 2009.

“We are all sad when our dad was gone. But this success belongs to our father and mother as well,” said them both. – SS (fl)

Konvo anugerah pingatMONDAY, 24 NOVEMBER – A total of eight graduates received the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) highest awards in conjunction with UMS 16th Convocation Ceremony which ended this morning.

For the Royal Academic Award, Bumiputera Category, the recipient was a student of Industrial and Organisational Psychology Programme, Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), Muhammad Yusuf Mohd Sobery.

The same category but for Non-Bumiputera went to Kimberly Yap Chun Ying, a student of International Business Programme, Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy.

The Chancellor’s Gold Medal was awarded to a student from the Industrial and Organisational Psychology Programme, FPP, Azliza Sanimin, whilst Yeo Sze Kai from the same faculty major in Education with TESL Programme was awarded the Vice-Chancellor Gold Medal Award.

Alumni Gold Medal Award was accorded to Phang Siew Thing of the Chemical Industry Programme, Faculty of Science and Natural Resources.

Also awarded at UMS Convocation ceremony this year was the Tun Zaki Tun Azmi Award which was divided into two categories, Postgraduate and Undergraduate.

For the Postgraduate category, prizes were awarded to Raymond Alfred @ Jenry from the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation, who graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ecological Processes).

As for the Undergraduate category, it was awarded to a student under the Doctor of Medicine Programme, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Lim Hai Yuen.

The final award named Zainal Abidin Bador Prize belonged to Junia Anilik, a student of Biology Conservation Programme, Faculty of Science and Natural Resources. – SS (fl)

tun penyelidikanFRIDAY, 21st NOVEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) lecturers are urged to increase their publication and research activities.

UMS Board of Directors Chairman; Tun Zaki Tun Azmi said that as academicians, it is their responsibilities that need to be fulfilled.

“Congratulations to those who are actively involved in research and publications for the university,” he said during a luncheon talk with researchers and lecturers at the Gallery, Chancellery Building.

He also asked the lecturers not to be idle by not doing publication, but continue and consistent in increasing their publications.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, Board of Directors members and the university’s Principal Officers was also present at the luncheon talk.

tun zaki siswaFRIDAY, 21st NOVEMBER – Students are advised to keep on focusing on their studies for the students’ and family’s future.

According to UMS Board of Directors Chairman, Tun Zaki Tun Azmi, students are advised to not involve in law breaking activities that will crushed down the parents’ hope and prayers for their children to be excellent in the university.

“Parents are the one who will bear the shame when they know that their children are involved with offences. Make use the opportunity in the university to graduate with excellent before going back to your family and serving your parents,” he said in a dialog with UMS students in a meeting session yesterday evening.

He also urged the students to always interact with the management of university through the Students Council (MPP).

“Any suggestions to the university can be channelled through MPP and will be forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor’s knowledge. We want this type of interaction to be applied even in the lecture room by having active academic Q & A sessions with your lecturers,” he added.

Around 500 students attended the talk and dialog sessions held at Recital Hall, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW), UMS.

Also present at the sessions were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students Affairs and Alumni) and Dean of FKSW, Dato’ Mohd. Hamdan Adnan.

sispa tauliahFRIDAY, 21 NOVEMBER – A total of 51 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Officer Cadet Students of the Civil Defense Corps (SISPA) were commissioned at a ceremony at the Dewan Resital (Recital Hall), UMS, yesterday.

The commissioning was officiated by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Haji Kamarlin Ombi representing the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman.

When reading the text of the Chief Minister, he said that with the variety of skills learned, members of SISPA were not only able to become graduates with extensive marketability but also able to provide assistance when faced with disaster, emergency or war.

“It is hoped that UMS and the Civil Defense Department (JPAM) will continue to intensify its community activities and volunteerism so the public can feel their presence and readiness thus boosting the image of the university, the department and government,” he said.

According to him, the commissioning ceremony held for the first time in UMS was able to enhance the spirit of volunteerism and attract more students to join the SISPA Corps in the future.

The event also saw the commissioning of Honorary rank of Assistant Commissioner of the Civil Defence Corps to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni cum UMS SISPA Corps, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali and the commissioning of the rank of Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel and Associate Major of the Civil Defense Corps to 15 allied officers.

Also held was the conferring of the national sovereignty medal to 104 Civil Defence personnel who had served in Ops-Daulat at Lahad Datu and the Civil Defense Long Service Award to a civil defense official.

Also present at the commissioning ceremony was the Director-General of JPAM, Dato’ Zaitun Ab Samad. – MA (fl)
