WEDNESDAY, 02 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) officially opened its UMS-Timor Leste Liaison Centre in a simple ceremony this afternoon.

The symbolic gesture was done by the Prime Minister of the Democratic-Republic of Timor-Leste, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao at the Academic and Research Gallery, Chancellery Building, UMS.

The Centre was established to coordinate the various cooperation as well as strengthen our ties with the government of Timor-Leste.

Earlier, Kay Rala was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations in a Commemorative Convocation Ceremony held at UMS Dewan Canselor (Chancellor Hall).

The Honorary Doctorate was presented by the Head of State, Tun (Dr.) Hj. Juhar Hj. Mahiruddin. Also present was Federal and State Cabinet Ministers, Principal Officers of UMS and invited guests. – SS (fl)

SELASA, 01 APRIL - Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) telah menandatangani satu Memorandum Persefahaman bersama National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL) pada Isnin.

Pemeteraian memorandum tersebut telah disaksikan oleh Perdana Menteri Malaysia Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak dan rakan sejawatnya dari Republik Demokratik Timor Leste, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao di Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya.

Pada majlis itu, UMS diwakili oleh Naib Canselor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah; manakala UNTL pula diwakili Rektor, Dr Aurelio Guterres.

Melalui perjanjian berkenaan, pihak UMS dan NUTL akan berkerjasama dalam bidang pendidikan, penyelidikan serta terlibat dalam perkongsian kepakaran. MoU itu juga akan melibatkan mobiliti pelajar dan kakitangan.

Dalam pada itu, UMS juga bakal menjadi kunci hubungan baik antara Malaysia dan republik itu dengan beberapa lagi jalinan kerjasama yang ditandatangani esok.

Turut diadakan Majlis Konvokesyen Komemoratif bagi memberi anugerah Ijazah Kehormat Doktor Falsafah Hubungan Antarabangsa kepada Kay Rala di Dewan Canselor UMS.

Kay Rala juga akan merasmikan Pusat Perhubungan UMS-Timor Leste di Galeri Akademik dan Penyelidikan Bangunan Canselori. –SS

MONDAY, 31 MARCH – About 400 people attended the Borneo Fiqh Convention which took place yesterday at the Main Lecture Hall 1, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The convention was officiated by the Assistant Director of Research and Faith, Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) Sabah Branch, Ustaz Muhamad Fadhli Ahmat.

In his speech, he said the programme which was initiated by Friends of Faith UMS was timely in strengthening the Muslim faith among Muslims in UMS and its surrounding areas.

“This first of its kind programme held in Sabah should be continued, not to mention the price of the tickets that are very cheap which is as low as RM10.00 only. I applaud this bold step and hope that participation would also be opened to friends in Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam in future.” He said.

In the meantime, the programme Director, Mohamed Nasyaruddin Abd. Latip said that the response from participants was encouraging and welcomed the suggestion of having the convention continuously organised.

He did not anticipate the unexpected turnout by UMS students and the community around Kota Kinabalu.
