WEDNESDAY, 25th MARCH – Broadcasting media is one of effective mediums in giving out information on the government plans and policies.
The above statement was said by a Communication Programme Lecturer from Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Saat Hj. Awang Damit in today’s Nation State Development Seminar Series 4/2015 held at YTL Auditorium.
According to him, the new challenge in this era would be whether the content inserted by radio stations is relevant to the nation state development or just merely entertainments.
“When we touch on the subject of nation state development, this subject also involving the process on developing knowledge, economies and peoples’ social life,” he added.
“If the people have knowledge; then, they can change their lives. This is also one of the development processes,” he explained more.
Sharing his experience when he was working with ‘Radio Televisyen Malaysia’ (RTM), he said that contents of the programmes and strategies are the key element in disseminating government ideology to strengthen racial unity.
“Without solidarity, a nation state will never succeed,” he said while presenting his paper, ‘The roles of Broadcasting Media in Building Nation’.
He also touched on new media nowadays. The new media are seen to be able to cover wider audience and also interactive.
“Today, social media are more interactive than the mainstream media, but the people need to be smart by thinking over information that they have received,” he stated.

WEDNESDAY, 25th MARCH – Blood donation campaign organized by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Corruption Prevention Secretariat (SPRUMS) Labuan branch received encouraging response from both Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) students and staffs recently.Aiming at UMSKAL community, the programme also aims to increase blood donors in Federal Territory of Labuan and giving out information on benefits to individual health as a blood donor.
The programme coordinator, Roji Sinun, said that the campaign objectives are to increase the hospital blood supply and also instilling integrity and conscientious values to individuals present. Indirectly, the campaign will be helping out to those who are in need of blood supply.
He also added that the campaign was organized to produce active students in both academic and also every aspect of their life including personality and spirituality.
About 134 students and staffs donated their blood including the campaign committee members in the blood drive organised by SPRUMS with collaborations from Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) and Labuan Hospital.
Targeting youth, SPRUMS believed that this group are active and will be able to influence their peers and thus, attracting more to donate.
The Programme Director, Syahidah Mahmud, expressed her thanks to all donors who are involved in increasing the hospital blood supply.
The campaign, start from 9 in the morning until early afternoon at 3, was held at Sri Menanti Room, Menara UMSKAL. The blood donation campaign was handled by Blood Bank Unit, Labuan Nucleus Hospital, headed by Blood Donation Campaign Coordinator, Raiman Lubugan and also staffs from Blood Bank Unit.

TUESDAY, 24th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Sports Centre Director, Mohd Asyraaf Fong Abdullah was appointed as Malaysian Women Football Head Coach in the upcoming ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Football Tournament 2015.According to a statement, he will be reporting for duty this 7th-28th April before going to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam with the national team for the tournament on 1st until 10th of May.
“Thank you Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) for believing in me to guide the national team,” he said.
Asyraaf also expressed his grateful to UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, and the university administrative management for supporting him to contribute his service to the country.
“The faith given to me, to lead the squad, is an honour for Sabah and the university,” he added.
Even though the time is short, he is positive planning strategies for the national team after friendly match games with Bangkok Thonburi University and Thailand national team in mid-April. -ZMD (JA)

TUESDAY, 24th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) Student Consumer Movement (GPS) Club recently held a two-day 2015 Photography Workshop.The workshop was also join-organised by Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) Labuan branch and was conducted by Mohd Hatta Yunus, a Computer Technician from Faculty of International Finance Labuan (FKAL).
A total of 20 photographer enthusiasts including students, government and private sector staffs attended the workshop held at the Main Lecture Hall and E-Commerce Application Research and Development Lab, UMSKAL.
The Officiating ceremony was perfected by Student Affairs Department Assistant Registrar, Mohd Fadzli Sarudi, representing UMSKAL Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik.
Also present were representative from Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) Labuan branch, Salina Matalip, and the Programme Director, Muhammad Azreen Adnan, UMSKAL Student Consumer Movement Club’s Multimedia and Publicity Exco.
During the workshop, participants were exposed with skills on using Digital Single-Lens Reflect (DSLR) camera, the three basic components: ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture, and also taking photos and photo editing using ‘Adobe Lightroom’ software during the practical session.-ZMD (JA)

MONDAY, 23rd MARCH – Basic Auxiliary Police Training Series 1/2015 are able to form a high self-discipline level among officers in Security Division, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).UMS Acting Registrar, No’man Haji Ahmad said it is important for uniform forces like our security officers to practise self-discipline in their daily task.
“This course aims to upgrade the security level in our campus, and also helps to form their personality through team spirit practised during their training period.”
“Thus, will help in producing better quality work in the future,” he added.
He was quoted during ‘Majlis Doa Selamat Anggota’, prayer to ask for blessings, to mark their Basic Auxiliary Police Series 1/2015 Training held in SUKSIS Building, UMS this morning.
He also prays for every security officers’ safety, and perseverance in their upcoming challenges and tests ahead.
Met by the media representative, one of UMS security officers, Rostam Marinsan said he was grateful and excited to be among the first chosen officers that will attend and completed the training.
“During our absence, we hope that both UMS communities and our family will always be safe and protected from any calamity,” he said.
During the ceremony, No’man took the salute from officers involved as a symbol of discharge of duty for them to attend the training. Present during the ceremony were Head of Security Divison, Lt. Colonel Abdul Talib Arifin and Director of Islamic Centre, Dr. Muhamad Suhaimi Taat.
