Hari keluarga Kolej EFRIDAY, 27th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Residential College E Student Welfare Committee (JAKMAS), recently organize the College Family Day as an effort to reconnect ties among the undergraduates.

The annual event, held at UMS Outdoor Development Centre (ODEC), was supported by 360 students and college’s fellow.

According to the college fellow, Ahmad Norazhar Mohd Yatim, students’ participations in the activities shows commitments from students. This also shows that students too want to balance their academic and also physical aspect in their life.
 
“In order to be a well-balanced student, students must be smart and able to divide their time wisely. They need to spare their time studying in order to achieve academic excellence but also spend their time by doing recreational and physical activities,” he said, while representing Residential College E Principal, in the closing ceremony.

Earlier, the Programme Director, Mohammad Malek Faizal Azizi said that the programme is one of the platforms to reconnect ties among students and the college managements.

“The programme also provides students’ with opportunity to understand the college administration and aims to encourage students doing recreational activities, cultivating team work spirits and learning problem solving, thus, increasing the students’ quality,” he added.–ZMD–

perhimpunan pendaftarTHURSDAY, 26th MARCH – In nurturing excellent work culture in organisation, UMS Registrar Department appreciate staffs that have shown excellent performance every month as examples and motivations for others in doing their daily tasks.

The appreciation was given during Registrar Department Monthly Assembly No. 3/2015, held this morning, at Galeri Majlis.

The Excellence Employee of the Month certificates were handed by Acting Registrar, No’man Hj Ahmad, to staffs that have shown excellent work performance for February 2015.

One of the Registrar Department staff, Mohd Afiz Mabni was among the few chosen. When met, he told the media that he did not expect that he was chosen to receive the recognition.

“This recognition motivates me to continuously provide better service in ensuring the university delivery service to be excellent,” he said.

Other staffs who also received the Employee of the Month certificates are Fauziyah Hj. Jakir from Academic Service Department, Mary Rachel Rebeiro from Administration and Governance Department and Jomin Mositil from Security Department.

The ceremony also held a launching for Registrar Bulletin Mobile Apps, apps developed by Information Management Division, Registrar Department.

takraw umskalTHURSDAY, 26th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) will organize various programmes to close the gap between the public university with local communities.

UMSKAL Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik, said that sports is seen by the university as one of the approach in ensuring good relation established with the local communities will be continuously.

He added that the university, including their lecturers, officers and students are requested to organize more programmes that will involve local communities in the Federal Territory of Labuan.

“UMSKAL will hold various programmes to close the gap between the university, leaders and communities,” he said.

He was quoted saying after watching the final match between students and players from Kampung Sungai Miri in UMSKAL Close ‘Sepak Takraw’ competition held at UMSKAL court, yesterday. Kampung Sungai Miri is the neighbouring village to the university.

Before the final match, Dr. Murnizam as the captain to Director Team together with Senior Deputy Registrar, Zamri Mohamad Tuah and Senior Assistant Bursar, Mohd Nazir Ab Manan had a match with the Dean Team. Meanwhile Assoc. Prof. Dr. Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal (UMSKAL Deputy Director), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Syed Nasirin (Faculty of International Finance Labuan Dean) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ag Asri Ag Ibrahim (Faculty of Computing and Informatics Dean) played for the Dean Team.

Also present to watch the tournament was UMSKAL Youth and Sports Officer, Gabriel Moinjil.

Dr. Murnizam also mention that the approach was taken in–line with UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, who wish the university to close the gap with the community, including local leaders by having community programmes such as sports, gotong royong, and also social and religious programmes.

He also expressed his thanks to the local communities and leaders for their supports and cooperation in ensuring the university’s programmes a success; including both cultural and religious programme.

Dr. Murnizam also welcomes any collaboration in organizing programmes involving students and the villagers. These programmes will ensure the students to know more all 27 villages in the Federal Territory of Labuan.

“UMSKAL had organized a few Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes with local communities in making sure the university to keep on relevant to the locals,” he added.

UMSKAL as the only public university in Labuan want their existence to benefits the free duty island communities.

Kampung Sungai Miri emerged Champion and first runner-up in the tournament, while the student was in the third place.

maria argentinaTHURSDAY, 26th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) skills in academic research especially in areas about seaweed, marine and natural resource can be further develop by technology and scientific partnership with Argentina.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, said seaweed is a proven example as a potential alternative source of energy and have potentials in medical, health and biotechnology industry.

“UMS strategic location, located in the Southeast Asia maritime and rich with marine and natural resources are beneficial and also an advantage in technology and scientific partnership,” explained Datuk Harun.

He was quoted saying in a ceremony while receiving an official visit from Ambassador of Argentina, Her Excellency Maria Isabel Rendon, to Universiti Malaysia Sabah, recently.

According to him, even though that Universiti Malaysia Sabah have no students or staffs from Argentina, collaboration between both parties in research and exchange programme still possible to be implemented.

UMS is offering ‘The International Politics of Latin America’ as a course in International Relation Programme. Latin America is a unique case study in learning globalisation and democracy.

Maria Isabel also give a special talk titled ‘Argentina-Malaysia Relations: Present and Future’ during the ceremony. –MA–

Angpow nightTHURSDAY, 25th MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah Kampus Antarabangsa Labuan (UMSKAL) 2015 ‘Angpau Night’ programme was held moderately but still joyful.

This annual event, held in Financial Park Conventional Hall, was full with entertaining programmes including dragon and lion dance, sand art performance and also singing performance by local artist, Cheryl Lee and Geraldine Gan.

According to the Head of UMS Student Affairs Department, Darwis Manainus Awang Kangit, the programme was organized aiming to make UMSKAL communities to become closer to local communities.

“UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah, is always encouraging students to involved local communities in their activities and programmes,” he said.

He believes that in the future, there will be good outcomes to both parties because of the good relation between the university and the multi-racial communities in Federal Territory of Labuan, including community leaders and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

Meanwhile, the Programme Coordinator, Teong Khan Vun commented that according to the Chinese Zodiac, Year of the Goat is the eight symbol and also the most meaningful symbol among the twelve symbols.

“In Chinese culture, the goat symbolizes joy, peace, happiness and freedom,” he explained.
