pdg sukanWEDNESDAY, 21 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be the first Public Higher Learning Institute with a first class international level artificial turf field.

This was announced by UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah at the UMS Sports Awards 2014 at 1Borneo Grand Ballroom last night.

He said the course was intended to support the government’s efforts to improve the sports quality of the country particularly in Sabah.

“The new field will cost RM2.5 million. Thus, tonight we are launching a trust fund which will finance the construction of the field,” he said.

Datuk Dr. Harun said that so far, UMS managed to raise a total of RM1.5 million.

“Pro-Chancellor of UMS, Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay has contributed RM500 thousand; RM20 thousand from the Ministry of Youth and Sports whilst the rest comes from other sponsors such as Carino and Jesselton,” he added.

The launching of the trust fund was done by the Minister of Youth and Sports Sabah, Datuk Hj. Tawfiq Datuk Seri Panglima Hj. Abu Bakar Titingan. – SS (fl)

TUESDAY, 20 MAY – An accountant needs to be intellectual, have superior physical and emotional energy and integrity in conducting their daily work.

Such was the statement by the Bursar of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Hj. Rizal Othman at a forum on ‘Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry’ which was held at the Auditorium of Centre for Postgraduate Studies UMS today.

Hj. Rizal who is a member of the Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) Australia, said that students should have courage and high self-esteem to become successful accountants.

Meanwhile, the Director of Accounting UMS, Dr. Sulaiman Tahajuddin said so far no study had said that there was a gap between university and industry.

forum2“Perhaps the myth which stated that there was a gap, refers to the technical ability and attitude of a person, who needs to learn the technical know-how themselves,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of Tunku Abdul Rahman College Sabah branch, Chu Wen Tyng advised students majoring in accounting to equip themselves with soft skills besides academic skills in preparation for the workforce.

He said in addition to communication skills, an accountant needs to have social skills, ability to lead a team and have good time management.

“The workforce currently seeks graduates who are balanced both in academic and soft skills as these are advantages to being a possible job candidate,” he added.

A total of 250 students majoring in accounting from UMS, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah and Lok Yuk Secondary School attended the forum jointly organised by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, State Education Department, Bursar Department and Accounting Centre UMS. – ZMD (fl)

Ketua Jabatn CanseloriMONDAY, 19 MAY – Each employee must have sound knowledge, skills and good attitude in executing their daily tasks and responsibilities.

Head of Chancellery Department, No’man Hj Ahmad stressed this at a meeting with non-officer staff which was held at the Event Gallery this morning.

He reminded all staff to apply moral values such as mutual help and respect.

“Don’t be a arrogant and proud and we should not be stingy with time, for time belongs to Allah S.W.T.,’ he said.

He added that an excellent staff should be able to hold office as a public servant and always ready to serve.

uasahwan APKTUESDAY, 20 MAY – A total of 73 Year 2 undergrads of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Sports Science Programme launched the 10th Basic Entrepreneurship Acculturation Expo (APK) recently.

The expo was a platform for creative thinking in planning business proposals to penetrate  the wider market in future.

The application of Sports Science in APK was also intended to promote the knowledge of sports science to visitors of the expo.

 Among the activities organised were fitness and agility games such as dart, lego, bottle-fishing and the like.

There was also a health measurement activity such as body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), height and so on. Selling of food, handicrafts, clothing, accessories etc were also held at the premises.

The application of sports science this year had enabled the undergrads to explore and learn some components found in the said field. – SS (fl)

Karnival kokum KimanisMONDAY, 19 MAY – In line with the implementation of the various transformation in conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 20th anniversary, the Curriculum and Student Development Centre (PKPP) launched a Premier Curriculum Carnival Programme with the Kimanis District community which ended last night.

The programme had been held at the Chancellor Hall (Dewan Canselor) yearly but this time at Kimanis, offering a variety of activities in the form of educational ones including community service.

The carnival programme Director, Ramli Arsi explained that almost a thousand UMS undergrads were involved throughout the three weeks of the programme.

“Among some of the activities organised includes sports programmes with the Kimanis community, educational activities with the children and host families involving 189 undergrads and 44 families.

“Also launched is a Tamu Carnival in collaboration with the Kg. Brunei, Kimanis Village Development and Security Committee at a site near the river which among others, to give UMS undergrads an opportunity to be exposed to UMS co-curricular programmes, as well as an opportunity for local communities to carry out their business of selling homemade cakes and delicacies made by the villagers themselves,” he added.

Meanwhile, UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah at the opening ceremony of the carnival also announced SMK Bongawan 2 as the adopted school of UMS.

He said the community programmes should be implemented on an on-going basis to ensure that UMS undergrads did not miss out in contributing to the rural communities.

“The University Community Engagement (UCE) Programme or community network programmes is actually the KPI for every public university in Malaysia to draw the undergrads and community closer.

“Such programme is useful as it provides opportunities for undergrads to learn the local culture, it is also a form of escapade for the undergrads, to be outside of the campus and enjoy the village atmosphere besides the opportunity to interact with their peers and village community," he said.

The opening ceremony of the inaugural carnival held off-campus was officiated by the President of the Sabah Native Affairs and Assemblyman for Bongawan, Mohamad Alamin. – MA (fl)
