MONDAY, 19 MAY – In line with the implementation of the various transformation in conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 20th anniversary, the Curriculum and Student Development Centre (PKPP) launched a Premier Curriculum Carnival Programme with the Kimanis District community which ended last night. The programme had been held at the Chancellor Hall (Dewan Canselor) yearly but this time at Kimanis, offering a variety of activities in the form of educational ones including community service.
The carnival programme Director, Ramli Arsi explained that almost a thousand UMS undergrads were involved throughout the three weeks of the programme.
“Among some of the activities organised includes sports programmes with the Kimanis community, educational activities with the children and host families involving 189 undergrads and 44 families.
“Also launched is a Tamu Carnival in collaboration with the Kg. Brunei, Kimanis Village Development and Security Committee at a site near the river which among others, to give UMS undergrads an opportunity to be exposed to UMS co-curricular programmes, as well as an opportunity for local communities to carry out their business of selling homemade cakes and delicacies made by the villagers themselves,” he added.
Meanwhile, UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah at the opening ceremony of the carnival also announced SMK Bongawan 2 as the adopted school of UMS.
He said the community programmes should be implemented on an on-going basis to ensure that UMS undergrads did not miss out in contributing to the rural communities.
“The University Community Engagement (UCE) Programme or community network programmes is actually the KPI for every public university in Malaysia to draw the undergrads and community closer.

“Such programme is useful as it provides opportunities for undergrads to learn the local culture, it is also a form of escapade for the undergrads, to be outside of the campus and enjoy the village atmosphere besides the opportunity to interact with their peers and village community," he said.
The opening ceremony of the inaugural carnival held off-campus was officiated by the President of the Sabah Native Affairs and Assemblyman for Bongawan, Mohamad Alamin. – MA (fl)
