Pendaftar Bengkel integritiFRIDAY, 28 MARCH – The Administration and Governance Department of the Registrar Department Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continued in its efforts to foster the culture of integrity among its staff.

As such, the department had organised a workshop on Development of Individual and Organisation with Integrity (PIOB) recently which was presented by the Senior Assistant Director of the Institute of Integrity Malaysia, Harisham Ibrahim.

According to the Deputy Chairman of the Organising Committee of UMS Integrity Month, Talib Abdullah Shani, the workshop aimed to foster the culture of integrity among public servants in particular UMS besides creating awareness on the importance of integrity within an organisation.

“This programme would help UMS staff understand the government’s efforts in implementing the National Integrity Plan (PIN) in creating a strong community in terms of moral and ethics, be religious and with strong spiritual values, backed by righteous character,” he added.

Talib said that the government is providing an insight into PIN to curb corruption, social problems in the community and bureaucracy which is prevalent in Malaysia.

“Therefore, I believe with such workshop, it would be able to expose and inculcate integrity to the roots,” he stressed. He was speaking at the official opening of the workshop which was held at the School of Medicine UMS Auditorium.

The workshop also provided an understanding to UMS staff of minor offenses that violate the ethics and compliance of the ‘I Promise’ which was signed by all university staff. – ZMD (fl)

konvo timorlesteTHURSDAY, 27 MARCH – The 2 April 2014 will be an historic date when Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) confers its highest recognition to the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão.

The Commemorative Convocation Ceremony will be held at the Dewan Canselor (Chancellor Hall), UMS and the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations awarded to the premier leader of the republic will be presented by the Head of State Tun Datuk Seri Panglima (Dr.) Haji Juhar Datuk Hj. Mahiruddin who is also the Chancellor of UMS.

Also expected to attend are the Chief Minister of Sabah who is also the Pro-Chancellor of UMS, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj. Aman and 38 members of the delegation from the republic.

In conjunction with the ceremony, a number of events have been scheduled which includes the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UMS and the National University of Timor-Leste on the 31 March besides another MoU with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of the republic after the convocation ceremony.

Gusmao is also expected to attend a luncheon with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak and wife, Datin Rosmah Mansor at Seri Perdana, Putrajaya. – CD (fl)

penyu kudatTHURSDAY, 27 MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is ready to offer its services and expertise in assisting the government to address the 60 turtles found dead at Pulau Tiga, Kudat believed to have been killed for its commercial value by some irresponsible parties.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah said that UMS through its Borneo Marine Research Institute (IPMB) specialised in the research of these endangered species.

He said, he had instructed a group of researchers led by Dr. Pushpa M. Palaniappan to conduct further observations regarding this finding.

Any statement pertaining to this matter issued by certain individuals before were not the official view of UMS which he considered to be more of a personal nature and did not involve the turtle research experts.

When asked about the issue, Datuk Dr. Harun also expressed his disappointment over the inhumane attitude of certain people who placed greed for personal gain, disregarding the government’s efforts to preserve this marine species which is threatened with extinction.

He also advised his staff to first communicate to him in future of such important matters so that action to send experts to conduct research could be implemented immediately to identify the real causes as well as reviewing the turtle population that can still be saved.

For the record, UMS had initiated the research on sea turtles in Sabah since 1998. Among the research undertaken included research on green and hawksbill turtles in Pulau Mabul. A total of 207 green turtles and 21 turtles have been tagged since the research began in August 2010 on the island. – SS (fl)

PC Timor-3112THURSDAY, 27 MARCH – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will stand to benefit through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste which would be signed on 2 April 2014.

Under the MoU, UMS will provide the expertise and skills to establish training schemes in the oil and gas industry to selected community in the country.

According to the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, for a start, UMS would offer the opportunity to study for certificates to diploma level to 30 selected trainees from Timor-Leste.

“The MoU will certainly increase the number of students thus putting the image of UMS internationally,” he said at a press conference held this morning.

He also added that a UMS-Timor Leste Liaison Centre would also be established to coordinate and strengthen the ties with the republic.

“The Liaison Centre will be officially opened by the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, His Excellency Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão at the Research Gallery, Chancellery Building UMS,” he added.

The Head of State cum Chancellor of UMS and Sabah Chief Minister cum Pro-Chancellor of UMS are expected to witness the signing of MoU. – ZMD (fl)

Rentas borneo jainabISNIN, 24 MAC – Kecemerlangan Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) dalam pelbagai disiplin ilmu, inovasi, penyelidikan dan sebagainya terus dipertingkatkan lagi dan terbaru, UMS mendekati masyarakat dengan penganjuran program Rentas Borneo yang menjelajah seluruh negeri Sabah.

Program yang dirasmikan Menteri Pembangunan Masyarakat dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna Negeri Sabah, Datuk Hajah Jainab Datuk Seri Panglima Hj. Ahmad Ayid di Dataran Dewan Canselor pagi tadi merupakan salah satu daripada aktiviti sambutan ke-20 tahun penubuhan universiti yang menjadi kebanggaan rakyat Sabah.

Menurut Datuk Jainab, asakan daripada pelbagai sudut yang melibatkan pelbagai isu sama ada isu ekonomi, politik, sosial, agama dan sebagainya memerlukan masyarakat berfikir dan bertindak dengan efisien dan efektif dalam pelbagai aspek.

“Amatlah wajar kita melakukan transformasi dan reformasi dalam segenap aspek kehidupan sama ada melibatkan gaya hidup, gaya berfikir, daya usaha dan daya tindak kita,” kata beliau yang turut teruja dengan program mendekati masyarakat yang dianjurkan Sekolah Pendidikan dan Pembangunan Sosial (SPPS) dan Sekolah Perubatan (SPU), UMS.

“Program mendekatkan masyarakat dengan UMS harus dipuji kerana UMS mempunyai Sekolah Perubatan yang sentiasa turun padang, masuk ke kampung-kampung di pedalaman Sabah, seterusnya membuat penyelidikan dan membuat rawatan terhadap penduduk kampung dan jelas sekali dapat memasarkan jenama UMS kepada masyarakat umum.

“Penglibatan daripada Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Sabah turut menjadikan program ini mempunyai impak tinggi terhadap masyarakat dan seharusnya jaringan kerjasama ini dapat diperkukuhkan,” jelasnya yang turut flag off peserta ekspedisi.

Program Rentas Borneo yang menggunakan kenderaan pacuan 4 roda akan membuat perjalanan melalui Beaufort, Sipitang, Tenom, Keningau, Nabawan, Kalabakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Tg. Labian, Sandakan, Beluran, Paitan, Pitas, Kota Marudu dan berakhir di Kota Kinabalu pada 30 Mac nanti.

Seramai 80 peserta dengan 20 kenderaan mengikuti perjalanan ini dan akan membuat perhentian di tiga tempat iaitu di SK Pementerian, Nabawan (25 Mac), SK Tg. Labian, Lahad Datu (27 Mac) dan SK Pinangkau, Beluran (29 Mac).

Di setiap lokasi ini, peserta ekspedisi akan mengadakan beberapa aktiviti seperti pemeriksaan dan rawatan kesihatan penduduk kampung, pemeriksaan gigi, jom masuk U, khidmat masyarakat, ceramah akademik dan persembahan kebudayaan. -CD
