THURSDAY, 12 MAY – Student Volunteers Mission, ‘UMS and the Community’ organised by Student Volunteers Foundation (YSS) Alumni from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently achieved their objectives at four villages.

Programme Director, Mohd Farhan Firdaus Jeffri said, the volunteer mission jointly organised with the Student Representatives Council (MPP) and the Student Affairs Department (HEP) brought about successful impact to Kampung (Kg) Bantayan, Tamparuli; Kg. Kindu, Tuaran; Kg. Pukak, Kiulu and Kg. Pengkalan Abai, Kota Kinabalu.

“This programme involving 70 UMS students successfully held a few activities, which included repairing of school huts, pedestrian walkways, road hump, and gotong-royong with the villagers,” he said in a statement.

Firdaus said, the programme which was conducted simultaneously in four villages was held for 3 days with various activities included ‘Bicara Siswa’, which hoped to inspire pupils of primary and secondary schools.

“More interestingly is that UMS student volunteers also organised a medical examination in all four villages involved , in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Health Clinic.

“Such programmes should make an impact and lasting impression on students to train themselves to become leaders of student volunteers who will contribute to society and the nation,” he said.

For the record, all student volunteers underwent a Special Action Course (KTK) as physical and mental preparation before joining the volunteerism mission. - (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 11 MAY – The Biomedical Science and Therapeutic Department, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently held a Community Health Care Programme at Kiulu, Tuaran.

Programme Secretariat, Dr. Nur Zuliani Ramli said, the one-day programme held at the Health Clinic Kiulu, Health Clinic Advisory Panel (PPKK) Kiulu and Healthy Communities (KOSPEN), at Community Hall, Kampung Malangang Baru, Kiulu.

“Themed ‘Jom Sihat Bah’, the programme was participated by about 100 residents from Kampung Tombung, Namadan, Malangan Baru, Malangang Lama, Ponohuon and Kampung Topinahaton,” he said in a statement.

According to him, the programme aimed to provide interactive education and health checks, besides promoting healthy lifestyle among local communities.

“This programme also aimed to establish close relationship between academia, medical officers, staff and public health institutions with the community in Kiulu,” Nur Zuliani added.

Among the activities held included health examination for non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and to identify individuals who were obese.

Also held was a blood donation campaign by the Tuaran District Hospital, a special session on breast examination for the ladies and poster exhibition on health education on infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and dengue.

Nur Zuliani also added that a health talk focusing on healthy diet for diabetes were also held besides talks on the safe use of drugs by the Kiulu Health Clinic Pharmacy and the Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition, UMS.

The one-day programme was also supported by the Acting Dean of FPSK, Professor Dr. Zainal Arifin Mustapha; Head of Biomedical Science and Therapeutic Department, Professor Dr. Urban John Arnold D’Souza; Organising Chairman, Dr. Kistina Binti Mohamed; Kiulu Health Clinic Director, Dr. Hairunnisa Hashami and the Chairman of PPKK Kiulu, Janih Bangud. – SS (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 11 MAY – Centre for Industry and Community Network (CICN) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) organised the programme CEO @ Faculty focusing on the sharing of experiences and life of successful individuals.

In his welcoming speech, UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah encouraged students to take the opportunity and learn new knowledge shared by the Chief Operating Officer (CEO) of TH Plantations Berhad, Dato’ Zainal Azwar Zainal Aminuddin at the programme.

“To UMS researchers, this is also an opportunity for us to understand the current needs and enrich the curriculum so that it is always relevant and of interest to the industry,” he said.

Dato’ Zainal Azwar who have extensive knowledge in the industry shared some points , which should be adopted by students in equipping themselves for the working world.

“Successful people today posses 80 percent emotional quotient (EQ) compared to 20 percent of intelligent quotient (IQ).  With EQ, we can control conflicts, emotion and understand our surrounding better,” he explained.

Dato’ Zainal also emphasised on the need to master the English language as one of the key elements to face the challenging working world today.

“Mastering foreign language especially English is very important and it has become a ‘bullet’ for graduates to fill the vacancies in the industry,” he stressed.

The CEO @ Faculty programme held at Dewan Resital (Recital Hall) was also attended by the Director of Industrial Relations Division (BHI), Associate Professor Dr. Arham Abdullah. – ZMD (fl)

TUESDAY, 10 MAY – The annual Meet the Customers Week Programme (MBP) jointly organised by the Bursar Department (BEN), Development and Maintenance Department (JPP), Department of Information Technology and Communication (JTMK) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Library is currently held at the lobby of the Library.

According to a statement from the organisers, the aim of this programme is to provide a platform for these departments to meet with their main customers namely students, staff and suppliers directly to ensure customer needs are identified and understood.

The statement added that among the objectives of the programme are to provide a holistic approach in providing service through casual interaction and communication that are friendly, transparent and efficient.

The official opening ceremony of this programme is scheduled on 12 May 2016 (Thursday) at 1 MegaLab, UMS Library by the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah.

Interesting talks have also been lined-up during the programme that included success secret revealed, ICT security, managing money, social comunication, technology update and many more.

Besides that, there are lots of exciting games and prizes to be won.

TUESDAY, 10 MAY – The ‘Fun Run & Ride’ programme organised by the Sports, Recreation and Enhancement  Exco of Residential College Tun Mustapha (KKTM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was held for the first time in conjunction with KKTM Carnival.

According to the college principal, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin, such programme could provide opportunity for students and the general public to remain active and to adopt healthy lifestyle habits besides spending time with others.

“Participants who joined the programme were from students of IPTA/IPTS, Secondary School, UMS Staff itself and the outside community,” he said.

Cycling participant, Lim Fong Han was the first to arrive with the time of 42:02:05, whilst runner, Romario Tanjong clocked in at 47:14:08 making him the first runner to arrive at the finish line.

Ten early participants who arrived at the finish line received hamper, medals and certificate of appreciation.

Deputy Principal of Residential College Tun Mustapha, Herman Asalah when met said the programme was one of the best medium to form a healthy community, fit and adopt a healthy lifestyle by being sensitive to the environment through walking, cycling and using engine-free vehicles.

The flag-off for the 10 kilometre run was followed by the 20 kilometre cycling and was officiated by Herman at the Padang Kawad (Parade Square) UMS at 7.00 am, witnessed by the Programme Director, Mohd Jakrul Nizam Ismail. – (fl)
