iktiraf antarabangsaWEDNESDAY, 27 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is honoured to have its Sports Science lecturer from the Faculty of Psychology and Education, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin selected as an Assessor for the World Rugby Referee Coaching Course Level 2, recently.

Dr. Nizam said the course which was held in Hong Kong saw him being given the task in evaluating referees from Singapore and two assistant referees from Japan.

“The evaluation session took place when they were refereeing a match between Hong Kong and South Korea,” he said in a statement to UMS media.

Dr. Nizam is currently the President of the Rugby Referee Association Sabah and Vice President of the Rugby Association Kota Kinabalu.

Among his impressive achievements are, being the only referee from Malaysia who achieved the highest level of rugby refereeing and an Educator for World Rugby that can conduct and issue referee certificates at international level. – SS (fl)

Yayasan Suria2WEDNESDAY, 27 MAY – A total of 25 members under the Felda Undergrads Support Group (PERSADA) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently organised the ‘Seerat Kasih, Semanis Senyuman’ at the Suria Foundation Home Tuaran.

According to PERSADA Advisor, Rohani Hadi, the programme was held to create awareness on the importance of social responsibility that should be taken, including by undergrads.

“This programme is to nurture community values among undergrads that would develop high self-esteem thus helping them to face the working world after graduation,” she said when contacted by media.

A total of 52 children from the Suria Foundation Home aged between seven and 17 years also participated in activities such as English Battleship and telematch during the programme.

Rohani added that UMS would also assist residents of the Suria Foundation Home namely Aryati Jasni and Razimah Raji to make preparations in sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (Malaysian Education Certificate) (SPM) in November.

“A motivational session was also held during the programme for the Suria Foundation Home residents presented by the Head of Publicity for FELDA, Asmarah Rikun,” she explained, who is also the Assistant Registrar at the Student Affairs Department.

Earlier, officials from Suria Foundation, Nur Maleena Abdullah also expressed her gratitude for the visit from UMS PERSADA which she described as a support that can inspire the residents at the welfare home to further their studies at tertiary level. – ZMD (fl)

Lentara Pengisahan wakil Sabah MsiaTUESDAY, 26 MAY – Lantera Bayu of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will represent Sabah at the National Narration Competition 2015 in September.

According to the coordinator of the group, Rohani Hadi, Lantera Bayu was selected after giving their all at the National Narration Competition State Level organised by the Information Department at Wisma Dang Bandang Building last Sunday.

“At the competition, a total of six groups competed at their respective zones where Lantera Bayu represents West Coast South,” she said when contacted by media.

With the theme ‘Seniman Sudirman Tiada Gantinya’, the group amazed the audience with their performance.

“We received a standing ovation after our performance that touched on the ups and downs of the life story of the late Sudirman, the artiste who brought Malaysia to the international arena,” he said.

Meanwhile, coach for Lantera Bayu, Fandyi Sanizan was proud of the achievement and described it as a result of the commitment and dedication of all members of the group.

He added that he would try to see areas that could be improved on, especially with regards to the quality of the group’s performance.

“We want this group to give a stiff competition and bring honour to UMS at the national level,” said Fandyi, who is also UMS alumni and was the winner at the same competition in 2014.

Lantera Bayu comprised Mujahid Halpi, Abdul Manan, Rishi Maran Subramaniam and Zainal Zainudin. – SS (fl)

Masak2MONDAY, 25 MAY – Members of the Housewives and Women Staff Club (KESUMBA) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) led by its President, Datin Baidah Ibrahim took some time off from their gotong-royong programme to attend a one-day cooking and baking demonstration by Giat Mara trainees in a programme organised by the Child Development Centre (PPKK) UMS, recently.

On hand to receive the delegation was the Assistant Registrar of PPKK, Rohani Abdullah.

According to Rohani, PPKK made use of their Saturdays to organise courses or workshops related to their work especially for their staff to improve their knowledge and skills in childcare.

“Every month, two Saturdays are dedicated to courses and workshops for our staff where they will also collect MyCPD points individually. The courses or workshops among others include childcare handling, fire drill and cooking demonstration,” she said.

Last week, trainees from Giat Mara Malaysia held a cooking and baking demonstration for staff of PPKK and members of KESUMBA, on invitation by PPKK. The trainees were Alvin Majuna and Mohammad Danel Ahmad who were ‘incubators’ or entrepreneurs and assisted by a trainee, Azis Ismail.

Amongst some of the dishes taught were Daging Masak Malvari, Ikan Masak Sos Thai, Ayam Masak Tauchu, Apam Balik, Bingka Pandan and Kuih Bahulu. – FL

Kaamatan PPIBTUESDAY, 26 MAY – The Kaamatan Festival is celebrated throughout the month of May in Sabah with various activities organised in various places and districts.

At Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the Kaamatan Festival was organised by the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language (PPIB), which started yesterday.

The four-day event offers a variety of exciting activities and is held at the premises of PPIB.

Among the interesting activities lined up are performances by local artistes and a singing competition, Sugandoi that has become one of the much-awaited event during Kaamatan festival.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Dean of PPIB, Professor Dr. Vincent Pang.

In his speech, Professor Vincent, clad in a Kadazan traditional costume said that such programmes were very important in preserving the traditional heritage for generations.

He encouraged such programmes to be organised in future. – SS (fl)
