TNCHEP baharuTHURSDAY, 21 AUGUST – The new Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni (DVC SAA), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali will focus on infrastructure facility and the welfare of students.

“At the initial stage, I will concentrate in improving facilities such as hostel, transportation and medical for students,” he said, describing the welfare of students as a joint responsibility of all UMS staff.

At the same time, he said, he would continue with the policies that have been implemented by the former DVC, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Md Mansur.

“I find the planning by Datuk Kasim is good enough. We just need to improve on certain areas.

“I would also like to remind students to always focus on their main goal when entering into university and not be susceptible to external elements that violate the regulations under the Universities and University College Act (AUKU),” he added.

UMS BerkabungTHURSDAY, 21 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be flying its flag at half-mast throughout its JFPIU and its campus grounds on the National Day of Mourning tomorrow.

In line with that, all programmes at KKFM, the campus radio station will also be suspended and replaced with Quranic recitations and religious programmes.

In honour of the arrival of the remains of victims of the MH17 tragedy, all UMS staff are also urged to wear dark coloured clothing instead of bright or bold coloured.

In addition, the Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP) UMS will be organising a Mourning and Final Tribute to its lecturer, the late Ng Shi Ing who was involved in the MH17 fatality, at the Mini Auditorium, Education block of the faculty.

All UMS community are invited to the ceremony which is expected to commence at 9.20 am. – ZMD (fl)

SUKMAB vcWEDNESDAY, 20 AUGUST – The sports championship organise for the Institutions of Higher Learning in Borneo enable to scout potential talents in Borneo to be brought up into the national and international level sports championship.

According to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, it is a right effort to organise the championship as this provide an equal opportunity to all undergraduate students studying in Borneo to compete among them as this was held in Peninsular Malaysia.

“The championship also gave an opportunity to the students to organise a grand event involving various IPT,” he said in his opening remark on the officiating of the 3rd University Students Games (SUKMAB).

He added, the knowledge and exposure obtained from the experience is precious in shaping the students’ personality when become a graduate later on.

On this SUKMAB edition, seven type of sports is competed; futsal, volleyball, beach volleyball, sepak takraw, table tennis, chess and petanque.

The opening ceremony is officiated by Sabah Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Hj. Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan. -SS (JU)

bendahari UMSTHURSDAY, 21 AUGUST – The Bursar Department of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has issued a statement stating that the printing and circulation of salary slip to all UMS staff shall be discontinued.

The move takes effect this month as a support to UMS Key Result Areas (UMS-KRA) on Service Delivery, Financial Sustainability and EcoCampus.

However, UMS staff can check their monthly salary slip through the Staff Financial Portal at UMS website quicker without having to wait for the hardcopy as circulated before.

The statement also added that staff who require salary slip statement for official purposes may contact the Employee Services Section of the department through extension numbers 1431/1334/1403.

As the practice before, the Department printed and distributed salary slips to all its employees monthly. - ZMD (fl)

pulau semporna1WEDNESDAY, 20 AUGUST - A group of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) staffs, led by UMS new Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs and Alumni, Associate Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali made a special trip to the small islands in Semporna for the Small Island Research Centre (SIRC) research studies recently.
 
A group of eight staff went to visits Omadal Island, Denawan Island, Gusungan Island and also Menampilik Island.
 
According to Dr. Ismail, the expedition is intended to identify the facilities available in the islands beside of taking footage materials for research and education.
 
He also mentioned that the research will be divided into two cluster, which are Science and Engineering cluster and also Social Science cluster.
 
“The research that will be conducted by SIRC will involve small islands and micro islands as term of reference, while for the research limitation, SIRC will focus on small islands in Sabah waters including Federal Territory of Labuan,” he explained during the two days expedition.
 
The establishment of SIRC as a research centre is to dignified the research and writing in various knowledge fields based on islets in Sabah. In addition, the research centre will be mapping to collect information and also identifying the island potentials for tourism economy and strategic (security) purposes. -JA-
