According to the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, the key concern was to uphold education and towards national unity.

“There is no use if we are highly educated but its people do not live in unity and harmony,” he said during a press conference today.

Datuk Dr Harun added, as the sole member of the state, he would highlight the plight of the rural community so that they would not be sidelined in knowledge acquisition.

“I will bring this matter up for further discussion to ensure the plight of rural children in terms of education is guaranteed,” he said.

Datuk Dr. Harun was one of 11 new members appointed to the council. He was also the only Vice-Chancellor of a public university elected to be a member of the council and act as a think tank and advisor to the country’s educational development. – SS (fl)

THURSDAY, 7 AUGUST – The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) once again collaborated in organising an Advanced Video Camera Techniques from 4 to 8 August 2014 at the Che Zulkarnain Laboratory, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) UMS.
 
The five-day workshop was attended by UMS students and film industry players in Sabah, conducted by well-known director of cinematography and videography in Malaysia, Che Muda Redzuan.
 
According to FKSW film lecturer, Dr. Zairul Anuar Md Dawam, the workshop aimed to enhance the practical knowledge of the techniques of handling a video camera at an advance stage.
 
“Participants will be exposed to the concept of visual, lighting and contra, camera movements and the use of various types of lenses and filters,’ he explained when met by Chancellery Media.
 
He added that the both sides would organise a series of workshops again this year such as Video Clip Production Workshop, Lighting Workshop and Directing Workshop. – CD (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 6 AUGUST – Good news to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) as the latest Webometrics ranking for UMS for the month of July 2014 has improved.
 
Currently, UMS is ranked 8th from 90 higher education institutions (IPT) in Malaysia, up two notch from the previous rating.
 
In the Southeast Asia region, UMS ranked 37th, Asian region ranked 441st and 1538th in the world.
 
In January 2014, UMS ranked 10th compared to 9th in July 2013.
 
According to the Director of the Centre for Strategic and Academic Management (PPSA) UMS, Prof. Dr. Marcus Jopony, the ranking in Webometrics either directly or indirectly showed UMS presence in the eyes of the world.
 
“This rating also reflects excellence in UMS website and its other centres particularly in terms of dissemination of information to the outside world and academic staff excellence in writing and in scholarly and scientific publications.
 
For the record, Webometrics rating is an academic rating system for higher learning institutions conducted twice a year, in January and July by Cybermetric Lab, the largest group of researchers in Spain.
 
The assessment is broken down into a number of criteria: Presence (20%), Impact (50%), Openness (15%) and Excellence (15%).
 
“The success of UMS in the rating reflects the commitment from all parties to the continuous improvement of various matters towards excellence of the University,” he further added. – CD (fl)

TNC Prof. Dr. ShahrilTHURSDAY, 07 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah continues to be proactive in their efforts to be an eco-campus university by the year 2017 through various programme transformations.

The latest programme, EcoCampus Management Centre invited 60 appointed staff as energy officers from the university Departments/Faculties/Centres/Institutes to attend Energy Management Workshop. The workshop is conducted by Mr. Steve Lojuntin, the Deputy Director of Sustainable Energy Devolepment Authorithy (SEDA).

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof advised each students and staffs to take the initiatives in reducing the electricity usage in Universiti Malaysia Sabah buildings.

“It is high time for us to study and recheck our activity. For example, long meetings and lectures will sure required e high electricity usage,” he said when opening the workshop.

He propose meetings, discussions and lectures can be shortened or carried out on-line, as in e-meeting or e-learning; but without compromising the objectives of the activity.

Since the launching of the ‘Blue Print Eco Campus’ on Last February, UMS committed in making transformations in realizing the ideas; including the launching of ‘Green Office Awareness’ campaign and ‘No plastic bottles in the university’.-ZMD (ja)

WEDNESDAY, 06 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah was one of 11 leaders was appointed to be in the panel of the National Education Advisory Council (MPPK) 2014-2016 Session with effect from 1 August.
 
Their appointment letters were presented by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the Minister of Education, at Putrajaya yesterday.
 
According to Prof. Datuk Dr. Harun, the appointment was considered as a trust given to the indigenous communities in Sabah to help improve the education policy which still required practical action.
 
“UMS will work to address issues relating to education in the state so that no gaps shall exist particularly in the national context,” he said.
 
He also said that UMS thinking committee were always willing to contribute their ideas to uplift education in Malaysia.
 
“In addition to providing infrastructure facilities, it is important for us to preserve the value of patriotism by promoting the aspiration on awareness towards environment,” he added.
 
The appointment of Prof. Datuk Dr. Harun lifted the image of UMS especially when it was noted that he was the only Vice-Chancellor of a higher learning institution appointed. – ZMD (fl)
