DSC 5125TUESDAY, 05 AUGUST – The island of Borneo is the third largest island in the world, keeping a wealth of fortune that can benefit the world community.

 

 

 

Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj. Aman in his speech said the island of Borneo made up of Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei are important geographically that possess many useful forest products.
 
“Historically, the forests of Borneo is a source of traditional medicines for the residents in the surrounding areas and those who still keep various cures for chronic diseases,” he said. His speech was read by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Masidi Manjun at the 12th International Borneo Research Council Conference at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
 
According to him, the wealth at the island of Borneo covers cultural diversity that gave an opportunity to its community to respect and accept each other despite the difference in religions and ethnicity.
 
“I hope that the discussions at this conference will result in a better understanding of Borneo and the issues we are facing today,” he added.

TUESDAY, 05 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Kadazandusun Chair once again hosted the 12th International Borneo Research Council for three day starting today.

The conference focused on social research, medicine, environmental science and biology in Borneo, covering Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah in his welcoming address said the conference was a catalyst for cooperation between the countries involved in the research and development of Borneo in the future.

“The conference is expected to strengthen the existing friendship network in order to increase knowledge and accelerate development,” he said. His speech was read by Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof.

The conference titled ‘Diversity and Dynamism in Borneo’ feature research participants and presenters from all over Southeast Asia, Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun representing the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj Aman. - ZMD (fl)

TCTP 2014MONDAY, 04 AUGUST – The Third Country Training Programme (TCTP), which will start this Thursday will see the participation of 18 participants from seven countries.

Themed ‘Integrated Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management Training Course’, countries that had confirmed their participation included Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Uganda.

TCTP Sabah is jointly organised by the Institute of Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sabah State Government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Acting Director of ITBC, Prof. Dr. Charles Santhanaraju Vairappan said TCTP aimed to provide knowledge and skills related to conservation management in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

“The three-week long programme is also to introduce and emphasise the idea of concerted efforts between agencies involved and local residents to better understand alternative living in conservation, besides facilitating interaction and sharing of experiences, learning and assessing of conservation projects,” he said.

He added that TCTP was also a platform to foster closer working relationship between state agencies and UMS, to showcase Sabah as champion in environmental conservation.

“The organisation of TCTP is also very special because it is funded by the governments of both Malaysia and Japan,” he added. - SS (fl)

raya msiaTuesday, 05 August – Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive celebration continued to be felt by the multi-racial society in this country.

Visiting each other houses, is a continued practise in enkindle the spirit of Eid; entering the 9th day today.

A Chancellery reporter managed to interview an international lecturer, from Bangladesh, whom has been celebrating his Eid in Sabah.

Dr. Md. Shafiquzzaman Siddiquee, a lecturer in Biotechnology Institute Borneo shares his experience celebrating Hari Raya in Malaysia which is far different from his country of birth.

“This year, my wife and I celebrated our Eid in Kampung Bakara, Sandakan. I’ve found that Malaysian family will be wearing Hari Raya clothes with a uniform coloured scheme, especially here in Sabah.”

“The visiting each other houses, is also practised. The guests are served with food and biscuits. Back home, there is no coloured theme clothes or a feast. We only served sweetmeat to the guests,” he added.

The celebration is celebrated festively, regardless of age.

“Back at the village; my children are happy meeting with their friends and relatives who came back especially for celebrating raya at the village. At night, they are having fun with the fireworks. It is very interesting,” he added more.

Apart from the contribution in producing research in UMS, the lecturer admired Sabah’s diverse culture, the unity and the mutual respect shown by the people of Sabah.

“Here, I see Hari Raya celebration is not just celebrated by the Muslims, but it was also celebrated together by everyone in Sabah, regardless of race and religion,” Dr. Md. Shafiquzzaman said with joy.

vc2MONDAY, 04 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah will hold an open-house to celebrate the Aidilfitri on 7 August 2014.
 
UMS staff are invited to the open house which will start at 11.00 am to 3.00 pm at his official residence.
 
Meanwhile, students who did not return to their hometown and live nearby are also invited to the open-house between 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm.
 
The Aidilfitri celebration this year is celebrated on a low-key to honour the tragedy that hit the country recently. – (fl)
