KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), through its Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP), continues to strengthen regional academic collaboration with Universitas Brawijaya (UB), Indonesia, through various strategic initiatives involving research, mobility programs, and bilateral academic development.
Recently, this partnership saw the successful implementation of a three-week inbound mobility program from 23 April to 17 May 2025, involving eight students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), UB.
During their time at FSMP, the students conducted research on developing food products based on protein from the haruan fish (Channa striata), a local fish species known for its high nutritional value and therapeutic properties, especially in wound healing.
According to the Dean of FSMP, Professor Ts. Dr. Hasmadi Mamat, the program served as an important platform to strengthen bilateral collaboration through an interdisciplinary approach between food science and fisheries.
“To expand the scope of collaboration, an official delegation from FPIK, Universitas Brawijaya, led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Eddy Suprayitno along with Dr. Abdul Aziz Jaziri and Heder Djamaludin, visited FSMP,” he said.
“The visit included strategic discussions and planning for future collaborations.”
“Key topics discussed included proposals for matching research grants, appointments of Adjunct and Visiting Professors, and enhancing student and staff mobility in a more organized and impactful way,” he added.
Hasmadi also mentioned that both universities proposed co-organizing an international conference, which would serve as a scientific platform to bring together researchers, industry players, and policymakers from Malaysia and Indonesia, especially in the fields of food, nutrition, marine resources, and tropical food technology innovation.
