program diplomatTHURSDAY, 30 JULY – 15 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students from various faculties were selected to participate in the Student Diplomats Attachment Training at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The three-week programme, which started from 27 July until 14 August enable students to gain knowledge and experience in diplomacy through visits at Wisma Putra and involvement in the activities carried out throughout the programme.

An attachment project under the Publicity and Public Diplomacy Programme under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Anifah Hj. Aman, the selection of UMS students for this first programme was an honour to UMS and for being appointed as the pioneer for this Student Diplomat Attachment Training Programme by the Ministry was such a high recognition.

Through this programme, participants will be trained to master individual skills and improve their communication skills, appearance, presentation, and other skills as well as gain exposure to the functions of the Foreign Ministry.

UMS Student Diplomats was established since 2014 and now has a membership of 15 students from various fields of study in Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

This small group of Student Diplomats was selected based on their character and positive attitude, have excellent communication skills, have high self-confidence, mature in thinking and fluent in Bahasa Malaysia and English in addition to being proficient in other languages.

The establishment of Student Diplomats was also viewed as timely and proactive in producing students with leadership qualities, presentable, in accordance with their line of duty as a diplomat for UMS.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah had the opportunity to meet with the 15 students in a briefing session with the participants at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport before their departure to Kuala Lumpur to participate in the programme.

gambar hiasanMONDAY, 27 JULY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will have its oil and gas simulator soon through the cooperation with university-industry.

This was announced by the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Industrial Development, Datuk Raymond Tan when launching the Sabah Industry Quarterly Bulletin (SIQ), recently.

He said, UMS through its Faculty of Engineering in cooperation with Sitegroup International was in the process of establishing the UMS Oil and Gas Training and Certification Centre.

With the existence of the centre, a platform simulator would be the platform for its trainers on the actual situation of working in oil rigs.

The construction of the simulator platform will take nine months to complete. – SS (fl)

rumah nc terbuka 2015MONDAY, 27 JULY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah held a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house today.

Held at his official residence at Taman Kingfisher Sulaman, the event was attended by students and staff of UMS from all level.

UMS Media noted that university staff took some time off on rotation to attend the open house.

UMS students also attended the event and helped themselves to the menu served.

HOME2TUESDAY, 14 JULY – Various parties continue to contribute to ease the burden of the less fortunate ahead of the Aidilfitri celebrations.
The Housewives and Women Staff Club Universiti Malaysia Sabah (KESUMBA) recently visited the Home Tuaran orphanage centre to spend time with the residents of the welfare home.
During the visit, KESUMBA also donated contributions to the fund of Home Tuaran and Aidilfitri assistance to the residents.
According to the Treasurer of Home Tuaran, Dr. Arsiah Bahron, the welfare home which became fully operational in July 2014 welcomes visits from outsiders who want to spend time with its residents.
“In addition to donations and aid, Home Tuaran also need donations from the public to support the motivation and encouragement to the children here,” she said.
The visit was also attended by the President of KESUMBA, Datin Baidah Ibrahim. – ZMD (fl)

Geologi menang dua kumpulanTUESDAY, 14 JULY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) sent two teams of students majoring in Geology to the ‘Geoscience Exhibition and Competition 2015’ held at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), recently.

The two teams ‘The Crockers’ and ‘The Huttons’ competed against 16 other teams from Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Curtin University Sarawak and host UTP.

Luck was on our side at the competition when The Crockers won the Best Exhibition Award.

The team comprised Kartigeyan Ramanathan, Ahmad Nazer Amre, Ahmad Zarif Kaldan, Ain Maisyara Yazrol, Leendy Gulibat Richard, Lim Yu Hong, Nur Shaizah Ismail and Syart Adillah Syaripudin also took the runner-up spot for the overall title in the competition.

For the record, both teams sent by UMS had only two weeks of preparation before the competition. – SS (fl)
